S. Truett Cathy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2014.
ATLANTA (AP) - Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy died early Monday at 93. The billionaire rose from poverty by building a privately held restaurant chain that famously closes every Sunday but drew unwanted attention for the Cathy family's opposition to gay marriage.

Chick-fil-A spokesman Mark Baldwin told The Associated Press that Cathy died at home surrounded by members of his family.

Cathy opened his first postwar diner in an Atlanta suburb in 1946 and by 1967 he had founded and opened his first Chick-fil-A Inc. restaurant in Atlanta. Over ensuing decades, the chain's boneless chicken sandwich he is credited with inventing would propel Chick-fil-A expansion to more than 1,800 outlets in 39 states and the nation's capital. By early 2013, the company says on its website, annual sales topped $5 billion as the chain offered up a taste of the South that went beyond chicken to such offerings as sweet tea, biscuits and gravy.

Under the religiously conservative founder, the chain gained prominence for its Bible Belt observance of Sunday - none of its hundreds of restaurants are open on that day, to allow employees a day of rest. Its executives often said the chain made as much money in six days as its competitors do in seven.

Those religious views helped win Cathy and his family a loyal following from conservative customers, but also invited protests when Cathy's son defended the company's donations to groups campaigning against gay marriage.

Cathy's son, Dan, who is currently chairman and president of the chain, had told the Baptist Press in 2012 that the company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." Gay rights groups and others called for boycotts and kiss-ins at Cathy's restaurants. The Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from kids' meals, while politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

The controversy later subsided.

The family-owned company has said it has had 46 consecutive years of positive sales growth. Cathy's $6 billion fortune as the founder of Chick-fil-A puts him on the yearly Forbes magazine list of the wealthiest Americans in the country. The company has listed him on its website as its chairman emeritus after he left day-to-day operations to younger generations.

Even well into his 80s, Cathy was actively involved in the chain's operations, including setting up a contract with his children that said they may sell the privately owned chain in the future but the company must never go public.

"Why would I retire from something I enjoy doing?" Cathy said in a 2007 interview. "I can hardly wait to get here."

An opportunity in 1961 led to the development of the restaurant chain's trademark chicken sandwich when a company that cooked boneless, skinless chicken for airline meals wanted to sell him pieces that were too big for the airline customer's needs. Cathy took those pieces and cooked them in a pressure cooker and served them in buttered buns.

The sandwich was sold at independent restaurants for a few years before he opened his first Chick-fil-A restaurant at an Atlanta shopping mall in 1967.

Cathy also was known for his efforts to help youth. In 1984 he created the WinShape Foundation to help "shape winners" through youth support programs and scholarships. He also created a long-term program for foster children that has foster care homes in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Brazil.

"There's really no secret for success," he said then. "I hope it will open eyes for people. They don't have to follow my recipe but this is what works for me."

Cathy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeannette McNeil Cathy; sons Dan T. and Don "Bubba" Cathy; daughter Trudy Cathy White; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, according to a company statement.

Back around 2010 I worked for Carnival Cruise Lines. I was working the VIP lounge and a distinguished stocky gentleman approached me to check him to the cruise. We chatted some and he asked me if I liked chicken sandwiches, I said I did. Not knowing who he was he reached into his suit coat pocket and gave me two gift cards for a couple of Chick fil A sandwiches. A few days later I mentioned the incident to my wife. I looked up Chick fil A and low and behold I saw the man I checked in, Mr. Cathy! I couldn't believe it. A few weeks we were in Torrance and I remembered I had the cards for two chicken sandwiches, so we pulled into the Torrance location. I ordered the sandwiches and handed the cashier the cards. His eyes got a little big. We sat down waiting for our order. While we were waiting an Asian woman, obviously the boss had the staff running all over making sure everything was in order. We surmised that she recognized the cards and thought someone from corporate was at the restaurant. We have been fans ever since. We are so fortunate to have a Chick fil A in Huntington Beach at Warner and Goldenwest just steps from our home. RIP Mr. Cathy

I loved Truett Cathy I felt that his example of faith, and integrity were of prime importance. He always seemed as though he had a sweet demeanor, but was a force to be reckoned with in a good way. My prayers are with this God-fearing man.

Great example to live by Bible-based convictions, regardless of how people respond and how if could affect you financially. But God is faithful, so there is no need to follow what the world says is right, when it is wrong in the eyes of God (Isaiah 5:20). Sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege of meeting Truett Cathy when I visited him at his office in Atlanta. Few people has caused such an incredible impression on me by knowing him after I have heard about all of the great things he has done with his life in serving others. We did talk for some ten minutes and I can tell you that these were some of the best minutes that I have spent with a human being...his integrity, his values, his goals, his warmth and kindness, his humbleness, his sincere joy by getting to know you...were some of the unique attributes that this man showed to me. May God bless him and his family. We are grateful with The Lord for having had the privilege of meeting him.

to all of the Cathy family; GOD was in need of a change of menu from Angel food to "chick-in"...so he picked Mr. Truett...I've had many meals at the Dwarf House in Hapeville and still come by for a "hot brown" when I come to Atlanta...many controllers from ATL Tower & ATL Center have enjoyed the Dwarf House food for years...

I found reading Truett Cathy's obituary so refreshing. There is much to be said about a family head that allows Bible principles to guide both his thinking and his actions. Certainly the Cathy family did not allow "the fear of men" to define either its personal decisions or its business practices. Mr. Cathy's life story has been indelibly stored in God's memory, and he is indeed precious in God's eyes. (John 3:16). My family offers its heartfelt condolences for your loss!

About 30 years ago, I delivered bread for Colonial Bread at the Southlake Mall location. I would occasionally see Mr Cathy, Bubba and Dan when they came in. The employees were the best, always fed me lunch, asking me what I would like to have. Didn't matter if my supervisor or someone I was training , they would even feed them. First class people, still think of them today. God bless the Cathy family.... Rest in peace.

Mrs. Cathey

You've been on my mind all week as I go through Jonesboro each day on my way to & from work, as I live in Griffin. I too am widowed for 2 1/2 years now. My late husband & I were only married for 2 1/2 so I can't image what you must be going through having spent most of your life with Mr. Cathey at your side & now having to face the future without him. I pray each day as I pass through Jonesboro that you are as blessed as I am to be surrounded by a great group of woman to walk with you through this time.

What an example! We always sat behind him at church and I was always amazed how he was able to physically stand up (he was only 90 then) and shake the hands of so many youngsters. He would always take coupons out of his suit coat for the children. My daughter said she wanted to keep her Chick Fil A coupon for a free sandwich because he gave it to her personally. He was always so generous and I'm grateful for Winshape Camps. My children have been able to attend several times. Winshape has made a difference in my children!

Your legacy won't just be how a successful business can be built by a strong work ethic and uncompromising Judeo-Christian values, but of the lives that you so freely invested in during your life. By ordering your priorities, you were an inspiring example of a servant leader to your family, friends, the business, and to the broader community. Thank you for "running a good race". My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this remarkable man. When I learned of his death, I remembered him coming to Huie Elem School, Forest Park, GA, in 1981 or 82, to speak at a PTA meeting. Our teacher's lounge only had a small "Mr Coffee" type coffee maker. The next day a coffee maker was delivered, from him, that was large enough we could all have coffee and we could use it for refreshments at PTA and other meetings. He saw our need and filled it. He was so giving. The world was better for having had Mr. Cathy for all these years!
